The birth of Royal Pakistan Navy came with the creation of Pakistan on the historic day of 14 August 1947. Like other navies of the commonwealth, Pakistan’s Navy also had the prefix “Royal” until the country was proclaimed a republic in 1956. At 0800 on 14 August 1947, the flag of Rear Admiral J W Jefford, Flag Officer Commanding Royal Pakistan Navy was hosted on his Flagship HMPS GODAVARI. The Admiral’s first signal addressed to the officers and men of the RPN was flashed to all ships and shore establishments.
Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi NI(M) is the current Chief of the Naval Staff of the Pakistan Navy since 07 October 2017.Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi Nishan-i-Imtiaz (Military) joined Pakistan Navy on 13 January 1979 and undertook initial training at Britannia Royal Naval College Dartmouth, UK. The Admiral got commission in Operations Branch in June 1981 and won the coveted “SWORD OF HONOUR”.During his distinguished career, the Admiral attained vast experience of Naval Operations, Training and Command assignments. His command appointments include Command of Surface ships, Commandant Pakistan Naval Academy, Commander 25th Destroyer Squadron, Command of Multi-National Combined Task Force 150 at HQ NAVCENT Bahrain, DG Pakistan Maritime Security Agency, Commander Coast, Commander Logistics and Commander Pakistan Fleet.Key staff appointments of the Admiral include Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Plans), Chief Inspector (Navy), Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff (Operations) and Chief of the Staff at Naval Headquarters.The Admiral holds Masters degree in War Studies from National Defence University. He has also done Command & Staff Course from Royal Australian Navy Staff College.
